GIGA Doctoral Candidates and Teaching

Teaching and Doctoral Candidates

Although the GIGA is a non-university research institute, it is closely associated with academic teaching, especially in cooperation with the University of Hamburg. It endeavours to convey its expertise to young academic researchers through the qualification of doctoral candidates.

Hamburg International Graduate School for the Study of Regional Powers

The Hamburg International Graduate School for the Study of Regional Powers has recently been established. It has as its mandate the analysis of the causes, forms and repercussions of: these unfolding power shifts among non-European regions and states; related conflicts arising about regional leadership within these geographical areas; potential contests over spheres of influence and the formation of governance structures among the new regional powers.

Teaching

The GIGA’s academics provide their region- and subject-specific expertise as part of the University of Hamburg’s curriculum. Five GIGA research fellows are professors at the university; an additional five are external lecturers.

These staff members regularly give lectures at the University of Hamburg in the following programs:

The GIGA also works closely with the German Army’s Helmut Schmidt University in Hamburg.

Ph.D. student promotion

The GIGA has developed a special support programme for Ph.D. students researching topics relevant to the institute (List of Ph.D. students currently undertaking research at the GIGA). The programme has various components including doctoral supervision by GIGA academics and a one-day colloquium for participating students once a month.

Requirements for participation in the Ph.D. student programme are as follows:

  • Supervision of the dissertation by a GIGA staff member (usually a professor or PD).
  • Integration of the dissertation into one of the GIGA’s main research areas
  • Formal acceptance by the GIGA supervisory committee
  • Regular participation in Ph.D. student colloquia and submission of at least two GIGA working papers
  • Willingness to be involved in GIGA research work and to collaborate in the main research areas

Procedure:

It is recommended that those interested in applying contact a potential GIGA supervisor (PD Dr. Martin Beck; Prof. Joachim Betz; Prof. Henner Fürtig; Prof. Wolfgang Hein; Prof. Robert Kappel; PD Dr. Patrick Köllner; PD Dr. Dirk Nabers; Prof. Detlef Nolte; Dr. Andreas Ufen). The applicants have to provide for the funding of their research (Country-specific Information on the DAAD Scholarship Programmes 2010/2011: http://www.daad.de/stipendien/en/index.en.html?) and they need the approval by one of the potential GIGA supervisors.

Applicants need to provide the following information:

  • Curriculum vitae
  • Diplomas (secondary school, BA, Diploma, MA) — copies are sufficient
  • Presentation of the research project (synopsis) in 10–15 pages
  • A fully completed application form (Application form for Ph.D. student programme)

Applications are accepted on a rolling basis. Confirmation of receipt is provided immediately, and decisions on provisional acceptance are made within 6 weeks.

What happens next ?

  • If applicants have provided for their funding and if they have the approval by one of the GIGA supervisors, they are given the opportunity to present their project personally at the next Ph.D. student colloquium.
  • After the presentation, the supervisory committee decides on the candidate’s acceptance into the GIGA programme. Every applicant is given personal feedback in the form of a discussion on the strengths and weaknesses of their application and presentation.
  • Dissertations are also supervised in cooperation with other universities and research institutes.

Who can apply?

In principle, all university graduates wishing to complete a Ph.D. in a field which falls inside GIGA’s main research areas may apply.
Particularly welcome are those applicants who

  • want to undertake theoretically based research and have methodological expertise,
  • have linguistic and regional knowledge of one of the GIGA regions (e.g., through semesters in foreign countries and research specialization),
  • have at least a basic knowledge of quantitative and/or empirical research,
  • have a good or very good university graduation grade point average,
  • have a very good command of the English language,
  • wish to join the GIGA team.

Components of the Ph.D. student programme

A joint programme has been developed for all Ph.D. students. It comprises the following elements:

  • Supervisory and target agreement between the Ph.D. students and GIGA in which mutual obligations are stipulated.
  • Workstations with Internet access. Students are also entitled to use the GIGA facilities (libraries, archives, databases, etc.).
  • Permission for GIGA Ph.D. students to cite GIGA as their home institution when participating in congresses and other academic events (e.g., spring and summer schools, graduate conferences) in order to benefit from special external funds where applicable (e.g., ECPR graduate mobility funds).
  • Potential funding from GIGA to enable Ph.D. students to participate in such academic events. Program members can apply twice a year for this funding.
  • Submission of two working papers for publication in refereed journals.
  • Presentation by participating students of at least one talk at a national or international conference.
  • Support from the GIGA in preparation for research stays in foreign partner institutions.
  • Ph.D. student involvement in GIGA working groups and the institute’s main research areas.

Financing

The GIGA finances the administrative elements of the Ph.D. student programme (coordination, facilities, etc.). Ph.D. students finance their doctorates independently with project funds or grants, etc. However, the GIGA also aims to assist in obtaining grants for its Ph.D. students.

What are the advantages of GIGA ?
GIGA provides Ph.D. students with the opportunity to work in a unique student research programme at one of Europe’s largest institutes for area and comparative area studies.

If you have any further questions, please contact our coordinator, Dr. Andreas Ufen
(). If you wish, you can also contact one of our Ph.D. students themselves (contact information is included in the list of GIGA Ph.D. students).
